چکیده
Satellite wind scatterometers are microwave radar instruments desimted s~ecificallv to . . measure near-surface wind speed and direction over the global ocean. NASA has a long term commitment to ocean wind remote sensing, starting from Seasat-A Satellite Scatterometer (SASS), through NASA Scatterometer (NSCAT), to SeaWinds-1. SASSwas launched in June, 1978 and operated for three months. NSCAT was launched on Japan’s Advanced Earth Observation Satellite (ADEOS) in August, 1996, and SeaWinds1 will be launched on ADE1OS-2 in 1999. As a continuation of the NASA wind measurement program, we are developing a next generation wind vector measurement instrument called SeaWinds1 B, scheduled to be launched in year 2003 on Japan’s Advanced Earth Obsenation Satellite-3 (ADEOS-3). The purpose of this paper is to present the system parameters and system design of this new instrument.

The spatial response function of SeaWinds backscatter measurements
Designed to retrieve near-surface winds over the ocean, the SeaWinds scatterometer makes 13.4 GHz Ku-band measurements of the normalized radar backscatter of the Earth’s surface. SeaWinds backscatter measurements are being used in a wide variety of studies, including ocean wind retrieval, sea-ice mapping and classification, iceberg tracking, vegetation, soil moisture, and snow accumulation. Two...
متن کاملSensor Synergy of Active and Passive Microwave Instruments for Observations of Marine Surface Winds
An example of sensor synergy of active and passive microwave instruments for observations of marine surface winds is demonstrated using data from the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite-II (ADEOS-II), which carried a Ku-band microwave scatterometer, SeaWinds, and the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR). Scalar wind speed observed by AMSR was evaluated by using wind speed observed by Se...
متن کاملSeaWinds Wind Retrieval Quality Assessment
The SeaWinds on QuikScat scatterometer is the first in a series of new scanning pencil-beam Ku-band scatterometers. The viewing geometry is significantly different than previous fan beam instruments, resulting in different characteristics in the retrieved winds. In this paper we provide an assessment of the reliability of the SeaWinds ambiguity selection using a SeaWinds data-only algorithm. An...
متن کاملHigh Resolution Wind Retrieval from SeaWinds
SeaWinds is a Ku-band pencil-beam scatterometer launched in 1999 on the QuikSCAT mission. It is designed to make nominally 25 km resolution observations of vector winds over the ocean. However, by taking advantage of resolution enhancement and its dense sampling characteristics, the wind can be retrieved at much higher resolution, albeit with greater noise. Winds with resolutions as fine as 2.5...
متن کاملLand and Ice Applications of SeaWinds Data
While originally designed for wind vector measurements over the ocean, past and present scatterometers have been demonstrated to be effective for large scale monit’oring of the Earth’s land and ice surfaces. SeaWinds is the next generation of Ku-band scatterometers. The wide swath of SeaWinds enables much more frequent coverage of the Earth’s surface than has previously been possible. SeaWinds ...
